West and Lumsden triumph in play-off

Trophy net division at Mid Ocean Golf Club yesterday after making up five strokes in the final round to force a play off.

The pair shot an eight under net score of 63 to draw level with overnight leaders Tom Stearns and Alan Leyland in the 72-hole tournament, before beating them on the first extra hole.

A delighted West said last night: "I didn't think we could beat them because Tommy's very competitve, but when I was in a hole Neil got us out of it and vice versa.'' West, playing off 10 strokes for the tournament, and Lumsden, with a handicap of 14, forced their way into contention on the way in, birdieing four successive holes -- the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th, -- before picking up a net eagle on the 15th.

A bogey on the 17th left the nerves "a bit frayed'', added West, but it took a good putt by Stearns to tie the teams on 262 and take the match to a deciding hole.

Edward Marshall and Ernest Rizzi, tied overnight in second place with West and Lumsden, dropped back two strokes to end in third place.

Meanwhile, in the gross division, Paul Evans and Michael Dunkley maaintained five-stroke lead to take the title.

Evans and Dunkley shot a one-over-par 72 -- a stroke better than their third round score -- to finish on 290 for the tournament.

Wednesday's leaders Blake Marshall and Jeff Eidson remained in second spot on 295 with Gosling and Murray in third with 298.

The inaugural Bermuda Ladies Pro-Am Classic continues at Port Royal today with the seven teams of one professional and three amateurs hoping for better conditions than they experienced in Thursday's opening round.

The only Bermuda team, skippered by Belmont pro Judith Astwood, lies in second place after shooting a net 68 in the gale-force winds which struck the course at the start of the 54-hole competition.
