Union keep play-off hopes alive

Defending Island Soccer League (ISL) champions Union kept their slim play-off dreams alive with a hard fought 6-5 win over Arsenal last night at the National Sports Centre (NSC).

Winless in the first four matches, Union had to gain victory to force a decisive game against Royal on the final match day to have any hopes of defending their title.

And win they did, courtesy of braces from Blenn Bean and Keimo Smith, while Ricky Saltus and Lashun Dill also chipped in with single tallies.

Second placed Arsenal, who have already clinched a play-off spot, got goals from Michael Parsons, who struck twice, Ralph Bean jr., Cecoy Robinson and Fabian Frankson.

Royal, who are also looking to cement their place in the playoffs for a fourth successive season, handed division leaders Kings their first loss of the season with a 6-5 extra-time win.

Currently three points ahead of Union, Royal's goalscorers were Darin Dowling, who snatched a hat-trick, Clay Darrell who scored twice including the winner, and Jelani Butterfield.

Kings' Rui Furtado also scored a hat-trick, although in a losing effort, with Chris Anderson and Cud-Joe Matthews also getting on the score sheet.

The last matchday is scheduled for Saturday at the NSC with all teams having everything to play for. Royal can solidify their spot in the play-offs with a win over Union, while Union will need a win and goals if they are to be successful in advancing.

Arsenal and King will battle for the top spot in the division and a first round bye in the playoffs.
