Pay cheques and an apology for teachers

Government teachers who were not paid their wages at the end of last month can now collect their pay cheques.

This newspaper reported on Tuesday that 15 teachers were not paid at the end of last month and another 90 were not paid for their scale post positions.

The Ministry of Education said the teachers would be paid this week, and apologised for the error.

A statement yesterday said: "The Department of Education today advised teaching staff in the Bermuda public school system that did not receive their [pay] at the end of September that cheques are now ready for collection from the Human Resources section of the Department at Covenant House, 64 King Street, Hamilton.

"Cheques will be ready for collection from 1 p.m. The Department apologises for the delay and is working to ensure this oversight does not occur in future.

"The Department would also like to thank the Accountant General for their assistance."

Bermuda Union of Teachers general secretary Mike Charles said he was pleased but hoped all of the teachers did in fact receive cheques.

"We have instructed our members to call first before they go down and we will wait and see if everybody gets their money. We have sent out a memo to that effect and asking of anyone who didn't get paid in September and still hasn't been paid to call us.

"I am happy to see that people who didn't get paid are getting their money."
