the office on the fifth annual World No-Tobacco Day later this month.

No-Tobacco Day, an annual event which takes place every May 31 and is sponsored by the World Health Organisation (WHO), is intended to discourage tobacco use by encouraging people to become aware of the risks of smoking to their health and quit.

The aim of this year's No-Tobacco Day is to put across the message that everyone has a right to work in an environment unpolluted by cigarette smoke, a Government Information Services spokesperson said yesterday.

"In Bermuda, Government has set the standard by banning smoking in all Government offices effective January 1992,'' the spokesperson said.

"Smokers are asked to help make their workplace safer and healthier by finding a friend or co-worker to sponsor them each hour they go without smoking. Sponsors are asked to support smokers who are trying to quit and sponsor them for each hour they don't smoke.'' It is hoped smokers will quit for the full day -- starting at midnight on May 30.

"If you have a co-worker or know of someone who could benefit from a smoke-free day then help by offering to sponsor them for each hour they don't smoke,'' the spokesperson said.

Sponsor forms are available at the NADA offices in the Mechanics Building, at Sedgwick James Limited (Bermuda), Cumberland House, and at banks and post offices Island wide.
