Seniors’ day care service at hospital closed down
A day care service for Bermuda’s seniors is to be cancelled by the Bermuda Hospitals Board, due to underuse. The programme, which saw its numbers of visits fall by 50 percent over a five-year period, costs $270,000 a year to run — and last year served just six to eight clients a day.The day care, run from BHB’s Continuing Care Unit, is to shut down on June 28.A spokeswoman said: “Clients and their families have been informed and directed to other organisations that provide a similar day time service in the community.“The service is separate to the CCU residential service in CCU Lower, CCU Upper and the Alzheimer’s Related Disorder Unit (ARDU), which has over 100 beds, and will continue operating as usual.”Day care was being given to seniors living outside the CCU, giving them recreation, meals and a medication delivery on weekdays. It has been provided for more than 20 years.CCU director Granville Russell said: “We are sorry to say goodbye to our day care clients, but with reduced client visits, the retirement of two key members of staff and increasing space pressures within the CCU facility, it was time to review the viability of this service.”It employed one registered nurse plus an activities aide and two part-time drivers. Both the nurse and aide are retiring, while the drivers will move to different BHB duties.BHB president Venetta Symonds said the organisation was undergoing an “intensive process of service review and reshaping” that would last four to six months. She said BHB would be examining other services as well.“The pressure is there for BHB to focus on its core services, and ensure they are provided at the highest quality and at best value,” she added. Will you be affected the closure?
