Shark still 100 miles away
Mary Lee the great white shark yesterday continued towards the Island, but last night remained more than 100 miles off shore.Described as a mature female, the 16ft, 3,456lbs shark was tagged last September off the coast of Cape Cod, and has since been tracked by Ocearch as part of a research effort. While the shark has spend post of her time travelling up and down the US East Coast, last week the marine predator changed course and began to swim toward the Island.Great whites can be found in all of the world’s oceans, including the northern Atlantic. While they have been recorded migrating on occasion as much as 14,000 miles, little is known about the reason for their travels. The massive predators have earned a reputation as maneaters, due in large part to the blockbuster movie Jaws, the animals typically prey on marine mammals, turtles, fish and seabirds. They are also considered a vulnerable species, but scientists have been unable to accurately estimate their numbers.Useful website: sharks-ocearch.verite.com
