Bermuda’s efforts in tackling gun crime and gang violence will be examined by an overseas inspector in November.Governor Sir Richard Gozney has confirmed that the inspector from Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary, which independently assesses police forces, will visit in two months’ time.Sir Richard invited one of the UK inspectors to Bermuda, with the support of the Police Commissioner and other senior officers in the Bermuda Police Service.However, the inspection will not be carried out by Bernard Hogan-Howe, as previously announced, as he has recently been appointed the Commissioner of London’s Metropolitan Police.Mr Hogan-Howe, who had agreed to visit Bermuda, was selected for his new post on September 12 after appearing before a panel of the Home Secretary and the Mayor of London.It is not yet known which of the other inspectors will now be coming to Bermuda. Sir Richard would only say: “The visit by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary is now due to take place in November.”The Royal Gazette reported in May that the inspection would provide “something of a cross-check … on the issues of policing of most concern to the Island”.Sir Richard said then that the inspector would look at “Bermuda Police Service’s action to counter guns, gangs and violence” and the inspector’s recommendations would be made public.According to Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary’s website, it independently assesses police forces and policing activity ranging from neighbourhood teams, serious crime and the fight against terrorism.“In preparing our reports, we ask the questions which informed citizens would ask, and publish the answers in accessible form, using our expertise to interpret the evidence,” it states.The Bermuda Police Service will only be responsible for the cost of flights and accommodation.Police Commissioner Michael DeSilva declined an invitation to comment.
