Businessmen and residents of North Hamilton were honoured at a weekend street festival.

'For the People' is an annual salute to the Economic Empowerment Zone (EEZ) community.

"We are here to celebrate this culturally rich community while honouring some of those who have contributed to the significance of this quadrant of the City," said Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Kim Wilson.

"For many years, this community has been the anchor of small businesses whose owners shared in the entrepreneurial spirit which has been passed from generation to generation. It has also been a lynchpin in the cultural heritage of Bermuda."

Senator Wilson singled out educator Margaret Lambe, Earlston "Scratchie" Lawrence, owner of Scratchie's Barbershop on Angle Street and Union Street property owner David Williams and his family for their contributions.

She similarly highlighted Government MP and Angle Street resident Dale Butler, the First Church of God and its late pastor Reverend Ronald Smith and the Leopard's Club for their contributions to the community.

Sen Wilson continued: "North East Hamilton is becoming a hub of commerce and social activity."

Saturday's event was organised by the Bermuda Small Business Development Corporation, in partnership with The Angle Street Youth Centre and The Chewstick Foundation.
