Young rider was twice over the drink-drive limit

A St. George's man admitted riding a cycle with more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood.

Jez Gregory Burrows of Waterloo Lane admitted having 174 milligrams of alcohol in his system while riding on North Shore Road, Hamilton Parish.

The legal limit it 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

Magistrates' Court heard Police spotted the 20-year-old travelling at a high rate of speed around 3.30 a.m. last Thursday.

They saw him swerve into the opposite lane and said he passed the central yellow line twice.

Officers stopped him near Shelly Bay and could smell a strong scent of intoxicants on his breath and noticed his speech was slurred. They cautioned Burrows, who said: "I came from Docksiders I had a few drinks."

Yesterday he apologised for the offence and pleaded with Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner to let him keep his licence.

Burrows said: "I am very sorry for my actions. I really need my licence because I have a job prospect that I am in for and I need to get my driver's licence.

"If I can't get my licence I won't be able to pay off my bills. I have a new bike that I need to pay for."

Mr. Warner handed him a $1,000 fine, seven demerit points and disqualified him from the Island's roads for a year.
