Committee of 25's new fund
travel on organised summer trips.
More than $50,000 was given separately by the late Miss Emma Brohr and the late Mr. Don Evans, Mr. Keith Hart, the Committee's director of publicity said.
The funds were used to purchase bank shares and have been placed in a special account.
"Both Miss Brohr and Mr. Evans spent more than 20 years working for the benefit of handicapped children in Bermuda,'' Mr. Hart said, "(and) this ...fund has been established as a result of a specific bequest made by (Miss Brohr), who was a dedicated member of the Committee.
"The fund has been augmented by a bequest from (Mr. Evans), chairman emeritus, who was also a valued member.'' The funds have been set aside "with the express purpose of underwriting the travel expenses of any `special' child whose parents or family cannot afford to send the child on an organised summer trip abroad with handicapped classmates.'' The Committee of 25 for Handicapped Children was founded in May, 1952.
Membership is approximately 100, mainly Bermudian.
The Committee runs the Bargain Box off Serpentine Road in Pembroke which provides a source of income together with the annual tag day to be held August 21 this year, Christmas card sales, membership dues, other donations and bequests.
In addition to its many gifts to handicapped children, the Committee built the swimming pool for handicapped persons at St. Brendan's Hospital in 1981.
Close to $95,000 in aid was given by the group last year.
