Sandra ReAves makes a popular return to Festival
Singer Sandra ReAves fills the `jazz' spot in this year's Bermuda Festival.
The legendary vocalist and Broadway actress, who made a triumphant appearance here four years ago in her show called `The late Great Ladies of Blues and Jazz', is back by popular request.
This time, her three performances, entitled `An Evening with Sandra ReAves' will range from great gospel tunes such as `Amazing Grace' to the blues of Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey, as well as the mainstream classics of `Unchained Melody', `Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow', as well as a special tribute to the music of Louis Armstrong.
Sandra ReAves' rise to stardom began humbly enough when, as a child, she worked in the fields alongside her grandmother in Mullins, South Carolina.
After singing in church, she decided to try her luck in New York City, where she gained her first successes in a series of talent contests. After singing in various clubs she won a contract with Epic records and when she appeared in the Tony Award-winning Off-Broadway play `Raisin', she was acclaimed by both critics and audiences.
Her many appearances on the stage include `American Dreams' with the Negro Ensemble Company, `Champeen' (playing Bessie Smith) which won an Audelco Award and the title role in the Pittsburgh Public Theatre production of `Ma Rainey's Black Bottom'. She has also played in `Miss Moffat' with Bette Davis and `The best Little Whorehouse in Texas'.
Her countless club appearances include The Cotton Club and The Village Gate in New York, the Hollywood Cinegrill and Dangerfield's. In Europe she has topped the bill at the Meridien in Paris, the Groschenoper in Frankfurt and The Casino in Lucerne.
She made her Carnegie Hall debut in `Cavalcade of Stars' and has appeared in jazz festivals all over the world. Films include `Round Midnight' and `Lean On Me' (title song). She played the role of Esther in `Another World' on TV and co-starred with Ann-Margaret in the NBC movie `Following Here Heart'. Her latest CD -- just completed -- is `Bold and Brassy Blues/Chicago Style'. She has been nominated twice for Helen Hayes Awards and the NAACP Image Award.
Sandra ReAves will appear at the St. Paul's Centennial Hall (a new venue for the Festival) next week from February 19 through 21, commencing each evening at 8 p.m. For tickets, apply at the Festival Box Office, telephone 295-1727.
