The winners of this year's Vincent and Cecil Burgess Scholarships have been announced by Bermuda Properties Ltd.
The 1995 winners, selected by their schools' faculties on the basis of scholastic aptitude, outstanding conduct and financial need, are 16-year-old St. George's Secondary School student Miss Shynika Outerbridge, a sergeant in the Bermuda Regiment Cadet Corps who plans to apply her bursary to her first year of accounting studies at Bermuda College, and former Whitney Institute head boy and honour student Mr. Jamiko Tucker, who plans to pursue a college degree in electrical engineering. The awards, which are valued at $1,000 each, were set up by Bermuda Properties four years ago in memory of the late Vincent and Cecil Burgess.
*** The AIDS-fighting STAR Foundation , meanwhile, was presented with a $5,000 cheque last week by the Paget Lions Club.
The donation -- proceeds from the service organisation's sixth annual Paget Lions Golf Classic -- came on the heels of a similar gesture by the Bank of Bermuda, which contributed $5,000 to the Paget Lions Club Scholarship Fund on July 5.
"We are delighted,'' STAR executive director Mrs. Carolyn Armstrong said of the aid to her foundation, "to be chosen as the beneficiary of a donation from this community-conscious group. These funds will be used to further our work in relieving the anxiety and concerns associated with the terminal illness HIV/AIDS.'' Mr. John D'Alessio, the club's vice-president, presented the cheque to Mrs.
Armstrong, saying during the presentation that the Paget group was "very pleased to assist this worthy organisation''.
The Paget Lions Golf Classic, of which Mr. D'Alessio was chairman, was co-ordinated by Mr. Ron Madeiros.
*** A new shipment of children's books has arrived at the Bermuda Youth Library , library staff reported recently.
Among the new titles at the Hamilton facility are Bruce Koscielniak's "Bear and Bunny Grow Tomatoes'' (about the quite different results that ensue when a hard-working bear and a lazy bunny both plant tomatoes in their garden), Frane Lessac's "The Dragon of the Redonda'' (a "delightful'' fantasy story of how three children, shipwrecked on the uninhabited island of Redonda, discover a dragon trapped inside a volcano) and Washington Irving's "Rip Van Winkle'' (the classic tale of a man who sleeps for 20 years in the Catskill Mountains and awakes to a much-changed world). In addition to the books for children and some new sound recordings, the library has also acquired some new titles for parents, teachers and young adults. Among the new books for these readers are "Christianity, Islam and the Negro Race,'' "Talking Peace: A Vision for the Next Generation'', "Five-Minute Miracles: 3,373 Quick Daily Projects For You and Your Kids to Share.'' *** On the subject of youth improvement, the Hamilton Parish Workmen's Club is inviting the public to register for its upcoming youth-oriented barbecue/rap session/workshop series.
