LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Disgusted by sentence
June 17, 2005
Dear Sir,
I am absolutely outraged at the so called punishment handed down today to Mr. Dinard Lima. This man literally ploughed a vehicle into his wife, kicked her in her face, then spun the wheel on her body, burning her flesh. All this whilst his child watched in horror.
This man walked out of court with a gigantic grin on his face. I?m willing to bet it will be a long time before Mrs Lima has something to grin about.
If this was an action of the heart, why didn?t Lima attack his wife when he supposedly caught her cheating? (Unless she was cheating in broad daylight at the entrance to Garthowen Road). Suspicion of an act does not warrant the type of attack she endured from this man. Magistrate Warner, you failed miserably today. You have just sentenced Mrs. Lima to more punishment than you can ever imagine. But then, I?m sure you won?t be losing sleep over this.
You have just advertised to potential criminals (cowards) that they can do whatever they want to their wives as long as they don?t have a previous record. Premier Scott, I am getting more and more discouraged in this ?New Bermuda?.
Selfish and arrogant
June 15, 2005
Dear Sir,
I would like to lend my voice and support to ?Warwick Senior? (June 14, 2005) concerning irresponsible people parking in disabled parking bays.
All disabled parking bays, whether in Hamilton or around Bermuda, are clearly marked. Yet repeatedly we see able-bodied selfish individuals who are too lazy to find a parking spot elsewhere arrogantly parking in those designated bays.
I have seen Traffic Wardens ignore these illegally parked cars. Warwick Senior mentioned double parking her vehicle (I say good for you!). Just an observation ? if the Traffic Wardens cannot keep double parking under control on Reid Street and Queen Street, what hope do we have of them ticketing cars without a disabled badge taking up space in a disabled parking bay? I say only in Bermuda!
It is too bad that Warwick Senior did not get the licence number of this selfish individual so that we could all look out for her car. I doubt this is the first time she has parked illegally and I doubt it will be the last time either! Shame on all of you who have no decency for those less fortunate than you! Editor?s note: ?Warwick Senior? did provide a licence number. does not publish numbers in letters from people complaining about bad drivers because it would be impossible to prove either that a traffic offence did in fact take place or that the number was taken down correctly.
Needed: New taxi board
June 5, 2005
Dear Sir,
I?m calling on the Premier to reinstate the Taxi Advisory Board so taxi drivers can have a say in the industry, e.g., complaints, advice etc.
The present Public Licence Board is a big joke. I would advise any cab driver against whom a complaint has been made to be heard in Magistrates? Court. The present PSLB has you guilty before you even state your case and it has too many anti-taxi driver members on the board.
I know of a case where a veteran taxi driver was hauled before the board because a known drug addict made a complaint to the PLB because he asked for his fare up front for a long journey as he knew of her background ? drugs, prostitution etc.
She claimed the driver forced her to pay up front and that he harassed her on the way down to the east end, yet she asked the driver to buy two single cigarettes at Dub City and used his cell phone three times. After going into Dub City she gets back into the cab to go to the east end. Does this sound like someone harassing you?
I?m glad to know the taxi driver rejected the board?s decision to side with a junkie over his side. I may add this driver is a highly decorated member of over 35 years driving.
