group, said yesterday it has invested $60 million over the past six years in highly sophisticated international telecommunications in Bermuda.
And it hinted there may be a legislative conflict with Government's new policy to open the door to competition in telecommunications. The company suggested that such a conflict may be found in the licensing agreement under which the global telecommunications multi-national operates in Bermuda.
The company said in prepared remarks about the policy, "Cable & Wireless does, however, have concerns regarding Government's new telecommunications policy as it effects their position as defined under the Cable & Wireless Public Limited Company (Consolidated Licence) Act 1985, and these matters are being explored.'' A C&W spokesman said that following the announcement of Government's new policy on the future of telecommunications, the firm has not altered its commitment to Bermuda.
It intends to continue to move forward with plans to enhance the Island's reputation as a quality international business centre and tourist resort with excellent telecommunications services and facilities.
The statement reads: "With an investment of over $60 million in the past six years, Cable & Wireless is proud of the highly sophisticated international telecommunications infrastructure that has been provided for Bermuda.
