Sports officials head south

next month to take part in coaching and administration workshops aimed at aiding youth development, it was announced yesterday.

Neville Tyrrell, Bermuda Football Association president, will be joined by the national team's technical director Clyde Best and Sonja Showers, from the Bermuda Track and Field Association, at the seven-day conference in St. Kitts.

There they will attend lectures and workshops on various issues including talent identification and athlete development, sports psychology, and youth sport and its applications at club, community and national level.

Announcing their participation, Sports Minister Tim Smith said it was "a specific and concrete'' development of one part of the six-point battle plan drawn up recently to assist Bermuda's young people and encourage them in pro-social activities.

The trip had come about following discussions with the Canada-based Commonwealth Sport Development Programme, a sports initiative of Commonwealth countries aimed at improving the understanding of sport as a way of developing young people, he said.

"We are following through on our commitment,'' he added.

The conference lasts from February 9-15.
