There's never a dull moment at Shell
same company would be counting the days until retirement. Not Stanley Marshall. According to the marketing manager of the Shell Company of Bermuda Ltd., and its longest serving employee, he's never faced with a dull day at work. "It's been very exciting working for Shell,'' he said. "Shell is an exciting firm to work for. There's never a day that goes by where I'm bored.'' Mr. Marshall joined the company in October of 1961, at which time he worked in its aviation department at what was then, Kindley airfield. "After spending some time there, I became superintendent,'' he explained. "I believe I was superintendent for about 12 years and then was transferred to St. George's Installation, as operations manager for Shell in Bermuda. I remained in that position for about 15 years and then was transferred to head office and took over the position of marketing manager when Jimmy Vallis retired, a position which I currently hold today.'' As marketing manager, Mr. Marshall is responsible for the general operation and marketing of the Shell Company of Bermuda Limited. The task involves looking after its retail outlets, aviation department, and overseeing the bunkering of its marine vessels. Mr. Marshall has worked in several areas of the company over his 36 years. What has struck him most over that period, is the positive transformation which has taken place in all of them. It was in 1950, he said, that the Company obtained its first service station, today there are 16 -- one of the most significant changes as far as the public is concerned. "I've seen tremendous change over the years since I joined the company,'' he said; "not only in Shell, but also in Bermuda itself in terms of the oil company and Shell's operation in Bermuda. And one has to say, that these changes have certainly been for the best. "One of the more recent is the purchase of LPG (Liquid, Petroleum and Gas) from Tropigas. It's an area that is totally new to Shell Bermuda and therefore presents an exciting challenge. Another area of change, which is also very positive, is a joint venture with our competitor at the airfield.
The leaving of the British Navy from Ireland Island presented us with another new challenge.'' Another big change witnessed by Mr. Marshall, was the move of the company's headquarters from Hamilton to St. George's in 1971. "At the time it was a big move, most of the companies in Bermuda were in Hamilton.
None of them ventured outside. We now have all of Shell's operations contained in Shell House in St. George's.'' There are many aspects to his job which make it interesting and rewarding, said Mr. Marshall, he was involved in the installation of the first aluminium pipeline for aviation at the airfield, and two of his schoolmates have joined him at Shell. "Even in a place as tiny as Bermuda, it's very unique that (sales manager) Wayne Soares, myself and (corporate manager) Steve Kendell, all want to school together, we were in the same class, and we were all members of the same graduating class in 1959. I joined Shell in 1961. Wayne and Steve went to other firms, but both joined in September of 1970 and now we're all working together and will all retire from Shell in the same year so we've literally known each other since we were five years old. It makes our job more interesting that we can work as a team.'' Community support, a very important part of the Shell company, has always been stressed. "We've sponsored, since 1990, youth football in Bermuda; sponsorship which enables payment of referees, field and equipment. We're very strong on our support of youth in Bermuda. We're just part of a team which is providing young people with an opportunity; somewhere they can participate in organised events where they can get discipline, character and leadership. It's a very valid investment we're making for all of Bermuda.'' PHOTO The team that installed Bermuda's first aluminium pipeline.
