3-0 to Jamaica in the Americas Zone Group II event in the Dominican Republic.

But with a tie today against another winless team -- Costa Rica -- and the steady improvement of 16-year-old Danielle Paynter, Bermuda could break their slump.

"In my mind, yes,'' coach and captain Jerome Bradshaw said when asked if Bermuda had the horses to pull out a win today. "We just have to get up the energy to go the distance.'' Bradshaw said fatigue -- both from the Caribbean heat and the mental anguish -- has been a tough battle to overcome in the three ties so far.

"This game is 50 percent mental and 50 percent physical,'' he said. "Both have to be clicking in order to be winners.'' Against Jamaica, Kim Simmons lost 6-3, 6-0 to Amira Samara while Debra Darrell "just ran out of steam'' in falling 2-6, 6-0, 6-1 to 17-year-old Kadija Richards. In doubles, Kelly Holland and Paynter were beaten 6-2, 6-2 by Sasha Hanna and Camille Walters. Paynter -- "gaining more and more confidence'' -- will likely open singles today and could displace a struggling Holland in a doubles pairing with Simmons, Bradshaw said.
