recently opened at the Masterworks Gallery in Bermuda House Lane off Front Street.

Since the ocean and sailing have been a large part of the British-born artist's life since arriving in Bermuda, it is perhaps not surprising that he has chosen a nautical theme for this show.

"As a painter the subject matter gives me the opportunity to explore geometric shapes and interesting dynamics, often juxtaposed with vibrant primary colours,'' Mr. Jones explains. "Reflections themselves are an abstract interpretation of the real thing, and sailing is, by its nature, graphic. It is a challenge to me to make water move and pour into those subtle nuances of colour beyond the ubiquitous blue.'' Of his latest paintings, the artist says "they are a study in the passing moment''.

"Rather than achieving the sharp, clear image of an instant, I strive for that dream-like quality that may be found in the rustle of a sailboat's flag, moving waves, or a person ambling in the shadow of a sidewalk.'' As the show catalogue indicates, all manner of water-related objects and activities fascinate Mr. Jones' eye -- the scale of the Tall Ships compared to passing marine craft; the orchestrated departure from their Hamilton berths; the relationship between Bermuda dinghies and their all-important stake boat; sharp white sails against light-absorbing shorelines; dreams of Hogfish Beacon and little Optimist sailboats, and more.

A former Marine Royal Commando and professional chef, Mr. Jones first began painting in 1992 when he attended the Fine Arts programme at the Bermuda College. Today, he is studying for his Bachelor of Arts degree in art history and philosophy with the Open University. He also paints from a studio in the Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard.

The artist has worked on location in Mexico, the United States, England and France, and his paintings are found in many corporate and private collections both here and abroad.

He lists Emile Gruppe, Lucien Freud, Sheilagh Head, and various European and American impressionists among the many artists whose work inspires him.

New Sailing Works will remain at the Masterworks Gallery until September 21, and is the last in its Artist Up Front!... Street series, 2000.
