BIBA showcases community spirit

Deborah Middleton

The Bermuda International Business Association launched its popular 'International Business Weeks' programme yesterday for the seventh year running.

The event was kicked off from the steps of City Hall by Hamilton mayor Lawson Mapp, followed by comments from BIBA CEO Deborah Middleton and local awareness committee chairman Anthony Roberts.

Ms Middleton said that although BIBA works throughout the year to raise awareness of the role that international business plays on the Island, the IB Weeks programme was the highlight of that campaign.

"Although our local awareness committee ? under the direction of chairman, Anthony Roberts, and programmes coordinator, Kristin White ? works tirelessly throughout the year visiting schools, putting on career workshops, motivational seminars and other events, we view IB Weeks as our special time and THE (sic) perfect opportunity to showcase our programmes to everyone in the community."

She added: "We feel it is important that everyone recognise the opportunities that International Business brings to our Island; not just from an economic standpoint but from one that affects Bermudians in a positive way. I'm referring to activities such as the scholarships they provide, their donations to our charities and, of course, sponsorship of sporting events and initiatives such as the student Bizcamps, not to mention the jobs their presence here creates for Bermudians. It is evident that their (International Business) contribution is significant to our island."

BIBA said the highlight of IB Weeks, which runs through October 16 this year, would be the second Annual Career Development Conference, where information on such topics as time management, negotiation, and pursuing your passion would be provided.

James Malinhchak, well-known speaker on the US college circuit, will also return this year after being well-received at last year's event.

"We've decided to bring him back as the keynote speaker for this year's conference, so that as many people as possible can have the opportunity to benefit from his motivational strategies. James inspires his audience to jump up and make things happen, and we are very pleased that he will be here in Bermuda again, doing just that."

Ms White said the format of the event would include elements from past years including a daily radio quiz and a debate ? from students on Bermuda's National Youth Debate Team ? on whether or not international business makes a positive difference in Bermuda.

BIBA will also be visiting primary schools with BIBA's 'Reba & Bobby Biba' promotional giveaways.

Reba and Bobby Biba were launched as the mascots of the primary school programme in 2002 and are featured in the International Business Colouring Book, a popular giveaway item with young students.

Also planned for IB Weeks 2004, is a 'How-to for Job Seekers' session, designed to offer those in search of employment assistance with writing a resume; preparing for a job interview; and obtaining information on various scholarships and training programs available on the Island.
