Wareham plays dual role in Walcott play
A newcomer to the Island is learning the ropes of local society through her participation in a play written by Nobel laureate Derek Walcott.
The play "Remembrance'' -- sponsored by the West Indian Association -- was written by St. Lucian-born Derek Walcott and addresses issues of colonial education through the eyes and memories of a Caribbean schoolteacher.
Jane Wareham said the play is split into two different time frames as the main character -- played by internationally renowned playwright Michael Gilkes -- recounts the events of his life.
Ms Wareham plays the dual role of Esther -- who is a British officer during the Second World War -- and Anna, an American dancer who has fallen on hard times during the 1960s.
The schoolteacher character recounts a love relationship he once had with Ester -- and draws parallels with the present-day character Anna.
"Esther's role is really as a foil for Gilkes' character as one of the many Caribbean men who were educated within the British system, developed dual personalities, and couldn't make up their mind if they were English or Caribbean,'' said Ms Wareham.
"They have this very antagonistic relationship, and he winds up playing the fool to attract her attention.
"But Anna relies on him to help her "find her way'', so she is eventually able to go back to where she came from with a greater strength of character.'' Ms Wareham, a newcomer to Bermuda working as a lawyer for Global Asset Management Ltd., said participating in the play had exposed her to a number of people who "have become like family''.
"It's been wonderful developing my understanding of Caribbean-type society -- it's certainly helping my understanding of Bermudian people,'' she said.
In addition to her acting skills, the talented young woman has had voice training with Roger Cleverdon -- the main chorister at the Westminster Cathedral in England.
"Although it was still at the basic level, the training has been helpful for learning how to breathe and project my voice,'' she said.
The play will run at the City Hall Theatre from today to 7. There will be a book signing on November 7 prior to the performance and Mr. Walcott will be giving a reading at Bermuda College earlier that same day.
Tickets for the play are $30 and $20 for students on opening night and can be purchased at the City Hall box office.
