Competition actually began last night at PHC Stadium where Vasco met St.

David's and Somerset made their Second Division debut against Social Club.

Tonight Boulevard, already with three cup matches under their belt, will take on Devonshire Colts at BAA Field (8.00). It is the new home of the Colts who have vacated Frog Lane field which no longer exists following excavation work for the next phase of the adjacent National Sports Centre.

Former St.George's goalkeeper Troy Hall is expected to make his debut in the Colts goal while Boulevard full back Leonard Hypolite will look forward to meeting up against his former team-mates. Colts' scoring will be boosted by the return of former youth striker John Richmond.

Randy Darrell, after a couple of years with Devonshire Colts, has moved back to Southampton Rangers and he will travel with them to Wellington Oval for their league opener against St.George's.

The East Enders, the most improved team in the First Division over the last three years, have been making the headlines this season for the wrong reasons ...their sudden and unexpected demise just five months after winning the Friendship Trophy.

Even without top scorer Janeiro Tucker, who leaves today for Guyana with the cricket team, Rangers should still be good for the three points. They have made some key signings, with Ascento Russell returning from Dandy Town and Herbie Dillas now available after suspension to boost the attack.

Also moving to Rangers during the summer was Somerset winger Jerry Webb.

Former St. George's captain Earl Basden -- now the club's fourth coach in four years -- was forced out of retirement when he came on as a substitute in the second half against Boulevard.

Though the team will no doubt miss the likes of Clay Smith, Dean Minors and Gregg Foggo in attack, their biggest concern must be to patch up a leaky defence. The return of the Bailey brothers, Philip and Dean, and Quinton Francis is eagerly awaited.

Tomorrow's other two matches see Second Division champions Devonshire Cougars hosting Dandy Town at Devonshire Rec. and North Village and PHC meeting for the second time this season at Bernard Park.

Josef Gooden will make his debut as Cougars coach and the immediate goal for the former Somerset coach is to avoid another relegation fight. Cougars have lost a couple of the players who helped them get promoted last season, with Brian Anderson returning to PHC and Kenny Darrell going back to Boulevard.

The lack of any big name signings means that the club will rely on the players who got them into the First Division to keep them there. Much will depend on Philip Clarke to score the goals and goalkeeper Leon Place to stop them.

The Second Division is promising to be competitive this season with at least five teams expected to push for promotion. Leading the pack will be Somerset Trojans and Hotels, two former First Division champions.

The Trojans opened their Second Division campaign last night against another former First Division power, Social Club, while Hotels return to the league after three years tomorrow when they meet Somerset Eagles at St. John's field.

Most of the Second Division teams have signed up new coaches, with Randy Horton back in charge of Somerset while former Bermuda international midfielders, Kenny Thompson and Robert Calderon, are in charge of Eagles and Hotels respectively.

Hotels have picked up the likes of Ricky Hill, Wayne Campbell, Chris Sabir, Clifford Roberts, Dennis Robinson and Derek Scott.

Another ex-Bermuda captain, Dennis Brown, takes up a new challenge at Wolves where he will be trying to transform them into serious promotion contenders.

Tomorrow their opponents at Devonshire Rec. will be BAA while Hamilton Parish meet Prospect at Wellington Oval.

The Women's League will be more prominent this season as they play a number of matches on Sundays as part of double-headers.

This year they have six teams and play begins tomorrow with Wolves Girls taking on PHC Teasers at Southampton Oval, Robin Hood playing Dandy Stars at St. John's and BAA Telecom meeting Rude Girls at Southampton Oval. All matches start at 1.00.
