Heart Math is a bio-feedback programme which helps to control anger. It also helps to solve problems in a better manner.

The Heart Math Technique was founded in 1991 in the Redwood Forest, California.

The technique is being used in Fortune 500 Companies, the military, and police forces around the world.

"It is an important new initiative and can improve the quality of life of many Bermudians,'' chairman of Family Resource Network, David Ezekiel, said about this latest anger management technique.

Mr. Ezekiel also noted that many of Bermuda's deep rooted family problems go unnoticed. Heart Math can help to control these problems, he added.

According to Kit Swainson, director of the programme, it can increase the immune system, vitality, and anti-aging hormone. It has also proven to access creative skills.

A computer programme, entitled "Freeze Frame'', by Doc Lew Childre is used to teach Heart Math.

"It allows the person to identify what state they are in,'' Ms Swainson explained, demonstrating the technique.

The person puts their index finger in a black tube connected to the computer which will read the person's heart rate. This will then show on the screen. A line going in a wave-like pattern across the screen shows that the individual is calm. A line going in no particular pattern, just zig-zagging up and down, shows that the individual is in an angry state and needs to take the correct steps to calm down.

Calming down could mean listening to music or freezing your thoughts. Then the individual must focus their attention on their heart. This can be done by taking three deep breaths.

Then he or she must ask the heart: "What would be better to answer this problem.'' For more information on the Heart Math Technique call the Family Resource Network Charitable Trust on 292-2215 or purchase the book Freeze Frame by Doc Lew Childre.
