Town slip quietly into second place
You could call Dandy Town The Quiet Team.
Despite possessing one of the First Division's more talented rosters, there are no headline seekers. There are never any arrests or coaching controversies and whatever player revolts there may be are kept behind closed doors.
All they seem to do is win. Quietly, of course. Never by much and seldom more than two or three times in a row.
And with little fanfare they have also moved into second spot in the table, to within seven points of Vasco.
A couple of timely goals from Darron Simons and an otherwise, well, quiet all-round effort at St. John's Field yesterday allowed them to nab a 2-1 victory over Devonshire Colts and leap ahead of Boulevard.
Naturally, there were no wild celebrations from Town players afterwards, although that may have something to do with the fact that, with only three games remaining, they're still in a precarious situation.
Simply, they can't afford a loss the rest of the way -- or a Vasco win, for that matter.
It may have been out of relief, after referee Stuart Crockwell kept his whistle silent on a couple of near penalties in the final ten minutes.
Cougars' bench erupted on the final one, claiming Town defender Jahmiko Marshall handled the ball in making a sliding stop in front of goal.
Maintaining the stop was with Marshall's chest, Crockwell let play go on and, 20 seconds later, blew the final whistle.
The game was critical for both teams; Cougars, who had won their past four games, needed a win to stay out of the relegation zone. But on this day, Town were too much, dominating most of the second half, save for a frenzied Cougars assault near the end.
Aljame Zuill was the man on the spot for Cougars, barely missing wide on a pair of headers and then having 'keeper Cyaminde Davis race out to smother another late opportunity.
But the one that had the fans buzzing was a slow rolling ball back to Davis.
Unpressured, he went down on one knee to scoop up the ball -- only to have it squirt through and go just wide of the post.
Ironically, Cougars' only goal came from the penalty spot, when captain and defender Shawn Smith ripped his effort into the bottom left corner in the 20th minute. Davis had only himself to blame, reaching out and tripping a Cougars attacker for the original foul.
As you'd expect from a quiet team, Town were steady as opposed to spectacular, doing a lot of little things right and taking advantage of whatever chances came their way.
Simons pumped home both goals for Town, bringing his season total to 13, 12 of those in 15 league matches.
He scored after just three minutes, converting a rebound from Chris Anderson's volley.
And he connected only six minutes into the second half, when Damon Ming's corner snaked through four players and landed at the foot of Simons, stationed at the far post.
Town have already been knocked out of the FA Cup and Friendship competition and have games left against Colts, PHC and Boulevard.
Cougars face an FA Cup semi-final showdown next Sunday against Devonshire Colts in addition to a tough league schedule (matches against Rangers, Colts and Vasco).
