Cup wash-out!
Bailey's Bay 201-9 St. George's 23-1 Rain spoiled yesterday's showdown between unbeaten Bailey's Bay and St.
George's...just as the Camel Cup final was shaping up for an exciting finish at St. David's.
Bad weather had also washed out last year's Overs match between these two teams soon after it began and this was a game in which both teams had been hoping to settle a score.
Now they will have to wait for the final to be rescheduled.
Soon after the St. George's innings began the rain started to fall.
St. George's lost opener Eugene Foggo on the second ball of the innings, bowled by Clarkie Trott. Dexter Smith and Jason Lewis were just pulling the innings together and had posted 23 in 4.1 overs when the rain forced the teams off the field at 4.25 p.m.
After waiting until 6.00, hoping the skies would clear, umpires George Francis and Wilbur Pitcher finally abandoned the match, which will now be replayed as soon as BCBC officials can find a free date. The decision is expected this week after consultation with the two clubs.
In the meantime, both will argue that they had the upper hand at the interruption.
Both were fresh off semi-final victories the day before, with Bay defending 238 against Police and St. George's scoring 195 to beat Western Stars by one wicket.
Yesterday, Bay were pegged back after a good start which saw Ricky Hill (21) and Dennis Trott (47) put on 37 for the first wicket in six overs before Gregg Foggo got the breakthrough by bowling Hill.
Trott and Glenn Blakeney (27) put on 69 for the second wicket in 13 overs as the 100 came up at just over five runs an over. The next partnership of substance was one of 45 for the fourth wicket between captain Charlie Marshall and Irving Romaine who carried the score from 110 to 155 when Romaine fell for 11.
Two runs and two overs later Marshall, scorer of a century the day before, was brilliantly run out in the 39th over for 32. Two more wickets then went down for just 20 runs in the next six overs as Bay found runs hard to come by late in the innings.
Jason Anderson was looking for a good knock against his former team before he, too, was run out after responding late for a sharp single call from Irving Burgess. He made 13.
Big hitters Corey Hill and Clarkie Trott never got going in the last five overs as Bay managed just 24 in that period to pass the 200 mark.
Spinner David Adams was the best bowler for St. George's with a good spell which brought him figures of two for 18 from 10 overs. Captain Herbie Bascome also took two wickets, but was costly, giving up 45 in his nine overs.
Gregg Foggo, like Dean Minors, brought back from school for the match and due to leave today, was one of four bowlers taking one wicket. His 10 overs cost him 60 runs while Eugene Foggo claimed one for 27 off 10 overs, though he missed an easy return chance from Marshall for a second wicket.
Too late: Dean Minors whips the bails off as this throw finds Jason Anderson of Bailey's Bay short of his crease in yesterday's abandoned Camel Cup final at St. David's.
