Burgess edges Wright in historic race finish

Elite men winner Neil Lupsic crosses the finish line on Front Street on Sunday. And (below) action from the dramatic Men’s B race.

Randy Burgess beat Tracey Wright by just 0.089 seconds to win the Male ‘B’ division in the closest finish in the history of the Butterfield Grand Prix, while Neil Lupsic and Gabriella Arnold won the Male ‘A’ and Women’s division respectively this weekend.Burgess managed to overcome a narrow 0.8-second deficit after the first stage to take the lead after two events and eventually hold off Wright by the slimmest of margins.Wright won the first event, the time trial, in a time of one minute, 4.7 seconds with Burgess hot on his heels at one minute, 5.6 seconds, a slim 0.859-second gap.It would be Burgess who would win the second stage, the Morgan’s Point road race, by 0.4 seconds, with Wright finishing in second place and the lead cut to less that half a second. The telling blow would be struck in the third and final stage, the Hamilton Criterium, where the best placed finisher between the pair would claim top honours.Thomas Godfrey attempted a break five laps to go, but a phenomenal drive lead by Norbert Meyer dragged him back with two laps to go, leaving seven riders contending the final sprint, with Dennis Joell just edging out Burgess for the win.The deficit was effectively slashed when Burgess crossed the line in second, with Wright coming in third, a position not good enough to claim the title. In the end it was a position good enough for Burgess who completed the three stages in a time of one hour, 47 minutes, 9.195 seconds, while Wright finished in a time of one hour, 47 minutes, 9.84 seconds.Darren Dowling finished in third, two seconds behind the champion. On a weekend that had high drama, race director Nigel Godfrey was thrilled with how the racing went, particularly in the ‘B’ division.“The weekend went exceptionally well, with good weather and some exciting racing,” said Godfrey. “The event far exceeded our expectations, we had 86 entries compared to 57 in the previous edition, which reflects the increased interest in competitive cycling in Bermuda, and provides a great platform to kick off the 2011 road race season.“Both the male A and B categories produced some very competitive riding.“The Morgan’s Point race was comfortably won by Team Madison riders, although even then the lead changed in the last 400 metres as Scott Williams, well out in front with team mate Brian Drea, suffered a flat tire and was passed by half a dozen riders as he ran the last section.“The Winners Edge team was decimated by five flat tires and just did not have enough time to get their top rider, Darren Glasford back into contention.“The closest category was Male B where Randy Burgess beat Tracey Wright over the three events by just 89/1000ths of a second.“The two finishing in the top four in all three stages.”In the ‘A’ division Lupsic padded his 2.5-second lead heading into the final stage to six seconds over second placed Gregg Reid, while Damian Sharp finished in third. In the final stage in Hamilton, the lead changed many times over the course of the 60 minutes, with youngsters Tre-Shun Correia, Dominique Mayho and Mark Godfrey setting the early pace in a breakaway, and then Brian Drea putting in a fine solo effort for five or six laps.He was eventually swallowed up by the following group with 5 laps to go, and in the end, Team Madison engineered three riders off the front to give Lupsic the victory.Arnold won the Women’s category with a slightly bigger margin of victory than the male winners, finishing 26 seconds ahead of Molly Pilgrim.Wenda Roberts rounded out the top three. In the junior classes, Victoria Davis won the Female 12 and under, while Alex Pilgrim and Daniel Oatley won the 12 and under and 13 to 16 age groups respectivelyButterfield Senior Executive, Curtis Dickinson, presented the awards at a lunch immediately following the finale.
