Islanders eager to bounce back
home loss against Boulevard when they meet Wolves in a Premier Division match at Devonshire Rec. tonight (9.00 p.m.).
St. David's coach Eugene Crockwell was pleased with the overall performance of his players last Sunday despite the loss, but is still asking for some improvement tonight.
"They did play well on Sunday but the game was lost because our finishing was off the mark,'' said Crockwell. "Our players worked hard, showed a lot of discipline but you are not going to win unless you finish properly.'' Going into tonight's contest, Crockwell realises his team are the underdogs as Wolves have been in the top division since last season and have more experience.
But the record between the two sides over the past decade reveals a series of close matches, which have always been fiercely competitive.
"I expect that sort of battle again,'' said Crockwell. "I'm optimistic that we will be able to remain competitive and fight hard for a positive result.'' St. David's expect to field much the same squad that played against Boulevard as none of the players picked up injuries.
Chae Simmons, one of the players counted on for goals this season, is expected to lead the attack with Del Hollis providing support from midfield.
Wolves, too, will be full of fighting spirit and confidence after their 1-1 draw against Devonshire Colts on Tuesday night -- a result that enabled them to advance to the semi-finals of the Martonmere Cup.
That triumph was a boost after they also lost their season opener on Sunday when they went down 1-0 to Vasco at Devonshire Rec.
Players making significant contributions on Tuesday were midfielder Anthony Thomas, full backs Tauramo Trott and Torry Davis and forwards Ellington Weldon, Nathan Webb and Nakia Smith who scored the lone goal.
And if coach Dennis Brown gets the same effort from his team, St. David's may find it hard leaving the Rec. with even a share of the points.
In tonight's opening First Division clash, Devonshire Cougars entertain Somerset Eagles (7.00 p.m.).
