Breaking News: Warning to swimmers over Portuguese Man-O-War
A warning has today been issued for swimmers to watch out for Portuguese Man-O-War jellyfish which are washing up in large numbers on the shore.
Worst affected is the south shore and some beaches in the east end of the Island.
A Department of Parks spokesman said: “So far this week the lifeguards have removed approximately 80 from the water and the beach at Horseshoe Bay. Over the last two days several swimmers have been stung by the jellyfish and required first aid treatment.
“Swimmers are advised to use extreme care while swimming to avoid coming in contact with Man-O-War.”
If stung, victims are urged to do the following:
* Exit from the water quickly and calmly to avoid going into shock.
* Remove any tentacles from the skin with sea water or towel.
* Treat the affected areas with vinegar.
* Apply warm water.
* Remove any of the remaining tentacles by applying shaving cream with something like a tongue depressor stick or a credit card.
* Finally treatment may consist of the application of one percent hydrocortisone cream to the affected area. Please seek medical advice prior to use/application of this medication.
