Bermuda bow out with loss to Kiwis
Bermuda bowed out of the Lacrosse World Championships in Canada last week with a 19-6 loss to New Zealand, both teams having entered the contest without a victory.
It marked the first time a Bermuda team had taken part in the Worlds.
?We have about 35 players to draw from,? said Jon Heckscher, president of the fledgling Bermuda Field Lacrosse Association and an attack player on the team.
?Three or four years ago, some guys started throwing a ball around in the park and we got a couple of club teams going.?
Prior to the Worlds, Tom Rooney, coach of a high school team on Long Island, New York was brought into help prepare the team as well as Steve Colfer, who coaches near Philadelphia.
?Why not shoot for the top?? added Heckscher explaining the team?s decision to enter the tournament.
The players paid for their flight and bought their own sticks and shoulder pads while the rest of the programme was financed by local sponsors.
