Door remains open for outdoor pro Bascome

Football pro David Bascome could be in the reckoning for Bermuda?s crucial second-round World Cup tie against El Salvador.

The midfielder?s recent signing for the Harrisburg City Islanders in Pennsylvania last December ? an outdoor club ? could pave the way for his re-entry into the national squad.

As coach Kenny Thompson reiterated yesterday, the issue had always been Bascome adapting from indoor to outdoor soccer. If Thompson, who is slated to watch Bascome play for his new American team very soon, is satisfied this has been achieved, then he may call up the veteran who has plied his trade indoors for the last 12 seasons.

?It?s quite possible,? replied Thompson when asked about the possibility of Bascome appearing against El Salvador in June.

Stressing he had never dismissed the prospect of Bascome playing in the current campaign, Thompson said he and Bascome have discussed the matter and the latter was fully appreciative of his concerns.

?Consideration would have to be given to how he would adapt from the indoor to the outdoor game and that?s it,? said the coach, flatly denying rumours of discontent in the national line-up because of Bascome?s exclusion.

?They are very different and adaptation would have to be made.

?It isn?t ruling out David and I have spoken to David and he understands that. In fact he has said to me he is very respectful of that position and it?s now up to him to prove to me that he can make the adaptation. So there?s no problem with me and David.?

He added that Bascome definitely wants to be part of the World Cup campaign and that?s why he is seeking to make the necessary changes.

?We have spoken about him now signing for an outdoor team and about me going to watch him play outdoors to see his level of adaptation from indoor to outdoor,? Thompson said.

And he noted that switching from one to the other form of soccer presents difficulties for even the best players and many teams have failed in swapping players across the two types of the game.

Meanwhile, given the imminent finish of the football season in the next few weeks, Thompson called on all potential selectees to keep themselves at the ready thereafter should a call to national duty come their way.

?Every player in Bermuda has the opportunity to be involved in the national team at a moment?s notice,? he added.

?It doesn?t mean a player has to be in super physical condition but, certainly, if any player has aspirations to play at a high level then he needs to keep himself in good general condition during the off-season ? physically, mentally and socially.?
