Draw sees Chameleons clinch league crown

A grudge match in Men's League hockey action over the weekend saw Rebels and Chameleons battle to a 2-2 draw.

But it wasn't enough for Rebels as the stalemate saw defending champions Chameleons again wrap up the league title at the expense of their closest challengers.

Both teams hit the pitch determined to come out winners and although Chameleons were short a number of key players, they almost took the lead early on.

Pete Hughes cracked the ball in from the edge of the circle but was denied a goal when it hit the post.

But Jonathan Hughes succeeded, opening the scoring for Chameleons by pushing a loose ball past the `keeper.

Rebels were fired up by that goal and replied with two of their own just before and after the half to take the lead.

For a while it looked like Rebels might hold on for victory but Chameleons managed to pull something out of the hat late in the second half when Billy Spencer fired the ball into the goal from the top of the circle.

In other men's play, Police Polecats notched a 2-1 win over Upstarts.

Both teams attacked through an evenly matched game but it was the Police side who scored first when the ball trickled into Upstarts' net.

Upstarts came back with their own opportunities at goal and after several short corners were awarded a penalty stroke.

Neil Carroll converted to even the match but Police scored again early in the second half.

Polecats had to defend for the remainder of the game as Upstarts piled on the pressure.

In Women's A league play, Swallows nearly wrapped their second successive league title beating Canaries 2-0.

Swallows netted both goals in the first half.

Jenny Burrell capitalised on a defensive error to fire the ball past the Canaries' keeper for the first and Karen Campbell slotted one into the back of the net afte a Shelley Clement cross.

Canaries were able to contain Swallows' attack in the second half, preventing them from extending their lead but were unable to get on the scoresheet themselves.

In their second outing of the weekend, Canaries fared better over Swifts with a 5-1 win.

Rhonda Rawlins was on target for the first goal and Lisa DeSilva continued the scoring with two strikes soon after.

Swifts marked tightly and did manage to pull a goal back. But Canaries bounced back with another Rawlins' goal and Michelle Ming fired a shot in from the top of the circle to complete the rout.

Swallows lost no ground in their quest for the B League title as they secured a 2-0 win over Ravens and a 1-0 victory over Orioles.

Swallows took the win but played with less urgency than in past weeks.

They only hit their stride mid-way in the first half of the Ravens' game.

Sandy Cram, on the left post, pushed the ball past the Ravens' keeper from a long corner for the first goal.

Keen for an equaliser, Ravens pushed forward but Swallows' defence kept them at bay.

Jenny Burrell added another goal but fine `keeping from Ravens' Heidi Roberts, a first time goalkeeper, kept the score to 2-0.

In the win over Orioles, Swallows' winger Karen Campbell scored the lone goal pushing the ball over the line after receiving a cross.

Orioles' keeper Fiona Doe made some great saves, including a penalty flick, to keep the score low.

In other B league play Canaries defeated Swifts 2-0.

Ali Harvey dribbled the ball past the opposition before passing to Jane Edgett, who tapped the ball into the back of the net for the first goal.

A determined Swifts side fought hard in the second half to try and get level but victory was sealed for Canaries when Joanna Stapff deflected a cross past the Swift's `keeper.

Cardinals pulled a lazy looking win away from their Saturday morning match with Bluebirds.

Erica Frith cracked one from the top of the circle to give Cards the 1-0 victory.
