Cricket clubs should soon have a proposal for a new domestic competition in their hands.

Bermuda's cricket coach, Mark Harper, says the aim of the proposed new format is to make local cricket more competitive and to enhance cricket in the Island overall.

Harper stated that in the nine months he had been here he had "looked at the structure of cricket" and his collective aims were to help clubs improve their facilities; to upgrade the coaching in clubs and to improve the schools' programme.

Regarding the latter, he said Bermuda Cricket Board of Control (BCBC) had held a workshop for primary schoolteachers last week, showing them innovative ways of teaching cricket skills and techniques. There were plans for more of these seminars.

At club level, Harper said that while certain clubs and players were "serious" about the game, there was room for improvement in the attitude towards cricket.

"Some of them (clubs and players) need to be a bit more professional in their approach in terms of the way they play the game as well as the fitness, attitude and discipline of the players. Also, they need to ensure there is a youth structure in the clubs."

Reflecting on his stint here so far, the Guyanese coach said: "I was forewarned coming to Bermuda that the task would be very demanding and nothing has happened to change that view.

"In any job there are challenges and it's up to the individual to conquer or overcome those challenges. Bermuda is very fortunate to have the cricketing history it has. There are a lot of talented players here and I am hoping that in the near future, we will be able to channel all our energies into playing the game and leave aside all the issues that seem to affect cricket."
