First blood goes to Swan in Davis Cup qualifier
Ryan Swan has one foot in Bermuda's Davis Cup team after he swept to victory over Devaunne Ratteray at Tennis Stadium yesterday.
In a best of three sets match, Swan came through 6-2, 6-0.
The player is one of three vying for two spots on the team that will travel to St. Vincent in April. The four man team already includes James Collieson and Jenson Bascome.
Swan, Ratteray and the third player, Jovan Whitter, are playing in a round robin qualification tournament throughout this weekend.
Whitter plays Ratteray today and Swan in the final game tomorrow.
Allan Simmons, honorary life vice-president of the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association, said the match was not as straightforward as the scoreline might suggest.
"I think Ratteray played some good tennis. They were both hitting well from the baseline," he said. "Swan is a little speedier than Ratteray but looking at the game you wouldn't have thought it was like it was - two-love. But Swan is very steady."
The only way Swan will not make the team now is if all three players win one match and he loses out on the number of games he won overall. As a result he was understandably pleased to have come through with a victory yesterday.
"Ryan was very calm," said Simmons. "But I am sure he feels great that he won because he knows now that he will probably be in first or second position having beaten one of the players and make the team."
Bermuda are in Americas Zone Group Four and will be up against Antigua, Barbuda, the Eastern Organisation of Caribbean States, the US Virgin Islands, Barbados, Bolivia and St. Lucia between April 1 and 7.
Last year Bermuda were relegated from Group Three after having gained promotion the previous year.
Today and tomorrow's matches both take place at 3 p.m.
