Twelve bills are due to be considered by the House of Assembly today, in what is expected to be a lengthy parliamentary session before the Christmas break.

One of the new pieces of legislation is the Tobacco Products (Public Health) Amendment Act which proposes sweeping regulations to ban smoking in enclosed public places, including bars, restaurants, hotels, places of work and even company cars.

The Bill also seeks to outlaw cigarette vending machines and make it illegal to sell and cigarettes and other tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18.

Of the remaining Bills to be dealt with today, seven are related to banks, trusts, business and financial regulations and there are two Motor Car Amendment Acts and a further Bill that seeks alterations to the law regarding timeshare licensing and control.

Also due to be dealt with at a second reading is the Hotel Concession Amendment Act, which includes a number of provisions including giving the Tourism Minister sole discretion to define what constitutes "substantial development" of a hotel property.
