New Deputy Governor of Bermuda named
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London has selected the current Deputy Governor of Anguilla, Mark Capes, to be the next Deputy Governor of Bermuda.
According to a Press release yesterday, the current Deputy Governor, Nick Carter, will return to London to continue his work for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office after the end of his tour of duty in autumn next year.
Mr. Capes, who has been the Deputy Governor of Anguilla since 2002, is a career member of the Diplomatic Service with previous overseas postings including Belgium, Portugal, Yugoslavia, Jordan, Nigeria, Austria, Turks and Caicos Islands (Deputy Chief Secretary, Providenciales, 1991-1994), New Zealand (First Secretary Economic and Environment, 1994 -1999). During his most recent tour in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London from 1999 until 2002, Mr. Capes was Deputy Head of the Parliamentary Relations and Devolution Department, in which capacity he also served as Foreign Affairs Advisor to the United Kingdom's Branch of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
In an interview from Anguilla yesterday, Mr. Capes said he had visited Bermuda in the past and looked forward to taking up his new position here.
"I'm very fond of Bermuda, it's very vibrant and I enjoyed my visits. I also look forward to meeting new friends and new colleagues and making a valuable and worthwhile contribution to Bermuda," he said. Mr. Capes is 51 and married to Tamara. They have two daughters, Alexandra and Sarah.
He enjoys fishing, travel and history.
