Happy Hood wrap up sixth straight title

A single penalty was enough to clinch Robin Hood their sixth successive Commercial League title on Saturday as they defeated rivals Tuff Dogs who had led the race for much of the season.

Hood coach Paul Scope was delighted.

?It was especially satisfying this year as we didn?t have the best first-half of the season and had to come from quite a distance back,? said Scope.

?We were fourth at one stage seven points behind Tuff Dogs and they had two games in hand! I think we are more consistent than any other team because of our squad.

?We also have a good mix of ex-pats and Bermudians, so we don?t have the turnover other teams in the Commercial League have.?

Hood still have a game in hand against PHC.

Tuff Dogs coach Miguel Da Ponte was gracious in defeat.

?My hat?s off to Robin Hood, who never gave up and kept getting results,? he said. ?To me that is experience. Don?t worry about what is going on around you ? just focus on your results.?

Saturday?s game was hard fought with little goalmouth action. The turning point came close to the half hour mark when Hood played a ball over the Dogs? defence and Danny Faria missed his header to clear allowing Tillman Darrell to run at goal.

Goalkeeper Ian Morrision did well to force him well wide but Faria then fouled Tillman who got up to blast home the resulting spot kick.

Hood then took control of the game for the remainder of the half.

The second half saw Dogs push forward, leaving some gaps at the back during the last ten minutes, which Hood failed to capitalise on.

Dogs? defeat saw them slip to third place while Lobster Pot clinched second after a 0-0 draw with MR Onions in windy conditions at White Hill Field.

Onions started with the wind at their backs but managed little other than a 40-yard effort from Chris Fleming.

Pot hit the post in the second half but it was Onions who controlled the game.

The goalless draw stood out on a day when most games produced plenty of goals.

BAA Wanderers finished their season in fourth place, despite going down 3-1 to North Village Rams whose clinical finishing made the difference.

After 30 minutes a flowing move from Wanderers ended with Phil Jarman scoring from close range in an otherwise scrappy first half on the dry and bumpy BAA Field.

The second half saw Wanderers camped for long periods in the Village half but a succession of squandered chances was punished as Rams broke away three times, finishing superbly on each occasion through Damon Wade, Calvin Dill and Ross Lambe.

A late Wanderers penalty was blasted over the bar ? and Serpentine Road ? by Jarman and minutes later an unmarked Gary Stewart hit high and wide from three yards to sum up both Wanderers? day and season.

However, BAA did better in midweek, triumphing 4-1 over Key West Rangers with all four BAA goals scored by forward Gary Wilson.

Key West lie in sixth place after beating Devonshire All-Stars 6-2 despite only having nine players.

Arnell Thomas bagged a hat-trick while Wayne Augustus, Craig Chrichlow and Mitchell Raynor netted one each for the home side. Larry Benjamin and a Ricky Mallory own goal made up the tally for All-Stars.

PHC, who still have two games remaining, hammered St. George?s 7-3 with Albert Thomas and Alan Fray getting two each and Blake Simons, Kenny Burt and Mark Wade scoring once. The ever-dangerous Lionel Cann netted two for St. George?s while Shay Pitcher also scored.

There were goals galore in the B Division too.

Champions Valley signed off with a 7-4 thumping of Pest Control. Troy Simmons fired a hat-trick while Kevin Issac, Jonathan Eve, Chevonne Armstrong and Fitzgerald Williams scored one apiece. Pest Control?s Ernest Spence also got a hat-trick while Stephen Watts netted once.

Devonshire Lions clinched their first-ever promotion to Commercial A after a convincing 5-2 win over Vasco with goals by Philip Clarke, Paul Simmons, Kevin Hodson, Granville DeShields and Preston Mallory.

Third-placed Dockyard Falcons demolished Prison Officers 5-1 via goals from Anthony Burchall, Gary Trott, John Periera, Dwayne DeRosa and Charles Swan.

Somerset Bridge Eagles picked up a 3-0 walkover win over Prospect/Fire who again couldn?t muster a side.

Wolves beat Somerset Extros 4-3 through goals by Sean Smith, Cecil Hendrickson, Horris Landy and Jamie Roberts while Everett Wellman got two and Mike Bremar one for the home side.
