An event asking people to pause for peace is to take place on Good Friday at the Devonshire Recreation Club in light of recent violent incidents.

Supporters of the club, where there was a double shooting last month, will gather at the grounds between 10.30am and 11am.

The event is taking place under the theme Pause for Peace, Recreating Community. It will serve to mark the launch of the club’s traditional Easter Sunday Family Day.

A spokesman for the event said: “This gathering is a response to the challenges being faced across the island which ‘The Rec’ has experienced directly.

“We are rallying to foster connections that include us all – leaving out, no one. The gathering will include some music and artistic expression, sharing from both the spiritual and secular.

“The legacy of the Devonshire Recreation Club is one that spans beyond its ‘neighbourhood’ to the whole island. It was the site of an iconic reconciliation decades ago; a pivotal historic moment which thankfully ended peacefully.

“Of course, being a human, the club has not been perfect. However, it is evident that this organisation has an innovative legacy that has helped to sustain the vital connections of our island’s community.

“One goal of this gathering is to promote an awareness of that legacy and foster a healthy sense of self, across our community.

“It is our shared view that communities exemplify resilience when members of society are conscious of ‘who they are’ and feel connected. This gathering is geared to that end.”

Shervin Dill, the president of North Village Community Club, has worked alongside the BFA and cricket clubs to launch the #OneTeam anti-violence initiative to “promote a sense of community”.

The effort included the planting of a Peace Tree as part of Pause for Peace, which began on March 10.

The Right Reverend Nick Dill, the Anglican Bishop of Bermuda, is a member of the Dock Hill Dill Family, while Sherwin Dill is a member of the Glebe Road Dills. It is said that the families are related.

Bishop Dill said: “The Devonshire Recreation Club building has a close connection with the Dock Hill Dills. A number of the members of his family will attend the gathering on Good Friday.”

Mr Dill added: “Members of my ‘side’ of the family will also attend; something of a ‘reunion’ with the Dock Hill crowd.

“The North Village Community Club has a long and strong history with our neighbours at the ‘Den’.’’

The two ‘cousins’ said they were heartened by the support for the gathering. Michael Weeks, the new Minister of National Security, is also expected to attend.

Supporters of the event include the Bermuda Football Association, the Devonshire Colts, Bishop Dill and his family, the Mirrors Project, Mid Atlantic Boat Club, North Village Community Centre, the Seventh Day Adventist Church (Devonshire) and the Roman Catholic Church.
