Nahki Wells provided his Bristol CIty side with a huge confidence boost ahead of their blockbuster FA Cup fifth round showdown with Premier League title contenders Manchester City on Tuesday.

The Bermuda captain came off the bench in the 61st minute and converted City’s winner from the penalty spot nine minutes later in their Sky Bet Championship contest at home to Hull City on Saturday.

It was the second penalty converted by Wells in as many games after salvaging a point for his team in a 1-1 draw away to Sunderland in the Championship in their previous outing, with the latest win extending his team’s unbeaten run to twelve games in all competitions.

“It’s a great feeling and for it to be the winner is great,” Wells said on City’s website.

“Last week it was an important point for us to keep the run going, and today it gets us the three points and we’re looking up the table, so we are really happy.

“Ironically, I was warming up next to Andy King and he said this is one of those days that we’re not probably at our best with the final ball but we will get a chance. It was a bit fortunate we got a penalty via a handball but it doesn’t really matter; it’s about putting it away and getting the win.”

It was the eleventh goal of the season for Wells who conceded the pressure was on to convert from 12 yards in front of his own supporters at Ashton Gate.

“It’s never easy. People that probably don’t take penalties or just watch on the side and have never really been in those moments probably find it very easy or think you’re just kicking it in the back of the net,” he said.

“But it’s a lot of pressure and you have to have a routine which I go through; try to stick to it, try not change my mind, focus and try and deliver. At times you are going to miss, but I think if you go to routine and practice enough, more often than not you see them in the back of the net, thankfully that what’s paid off.”

It was the second straight match City were awarded a penalty after previously going 469 without one.

“I guess the tables are turned a bit, we are getting a bit of the fortune that we probably deserved long before,” Wells said. “To have two important penalties after coming on as a sub in both games and to dispatch them is a great feeling, so really happy.”

City were thoroughly deserving of the result, which lifted them to 13th and to within nine points of the play-off positions.

“We were the team looking most likely to score. We got in the better goalscoring positions,” Wells said.

“Our delivery or final pass was quite woeful at times and I think if we were at our best we probably would have got four of five, but getting it via penalty is just as good as getting it any other way.”

Having returned to winning ways, Wells and his team-mates are heading into the massive FA Cup tie with Pep Guardiola’s team both with confidence.

“We are playing against the best players in the world and we are all looking forward to it,” Wells said.

“But to go into it eleven unbeaten at home, a full house with all this amazing support behind us, you never know. We will just be relishing the tie.”
