Marshall's men ruin Cann homecoming
St. David’s 124
Social Club 126-6
Lionel Cann’s return as player-coach of St. David’s after a season with Southampton Rangers was spoiled at Lord’s yesterday when visiting Social Club handed the Islanders a four-wicket defeat in their Premier Division opener.
Taking leading roles in Social Club’s victory were player-coach Charlie Marshall and Bermuda’s World Cup strike bowler Kevin Hurdle who teamed up to take six wickets between them while solid batting support was to follow, featuring both Marshall and opener Dano Outerbridge.
Cann, a pivotal player during Bermuda’s World Cup build-up campaign, won’t be happy with either his or his team’s performance. He was dismissed for a duck yesterday, off the bowling off Hurdle.
Instead this was veteran Marshall’s day as he inspired his attack in a quick demolition of the home side in a game reduced to 35 overs because of rain.
Marshall, with his seam bowling, snatched three for 10 off 3.1 overs while Hurdle claimed three for 12 off five overs. Jaymo Durham chipped in with two for 17 off seven overs while Jeffrey Tyrell took two for 33 off seven.
Hurdle and Durham were responsible for the miserable start for St. David’s with the two having the first four bats back in the pavilion with just 21 runs on the board.
O.J.Pitcher put up some resistance with a patient knock of 14 and teamed up with Arthur Pitcher (27) to take the score from 21 for five to 57 before the former was bowled by Tyrell.
The home side got decent contributions from Justin Pitcher (21) and Mikkail Crockwell (19), but when Marshall joined the attack it wasn’t long before St. David’s were all out.
In the chase for their winning target of 125, Social Club reached victory in 28.4 overs with Marshall top scorer on 37, helping the team recover from 51 for three after opener Outerbridge and Damon Rabain (4) and Detroy Smith (13) had been dismissed.
The player-coach got valuable support from Ricky Hoyt, who was undefeated on 19, and Winston Simmons who hit 13.
Arthur Pitcher had the best bowling figures for the East Enders with two for 23 off six overs while O’Brien had two for 24 off seven overs.
Somerset CC 130
St.George’s CC 73
(match reduced to 36 overs)
Veteran left arm spinner Hasan Durham celebrated his arrival at Somerset yesterday by claiming four wickets to inspire the home team to a 77-run triumph over arch rivals St.George’s.
After new ball pair Jacobi Robinson and teenager Greg Maybury jr made the early breakthrough to have the East Enders wobbling at nine for four inside the first ten overs, Durham came into the attack and ripped through the visitors’ order with devastating effect, seizing figures of four for nine off only 4.2 overs of spin.
Robinson and Maybury finished with two for nine and two for 28 respectively as St.George’s were dismissed in only 18.2 overs.
Sri Lankan Uhpal Dhannika topped the East Enders batting with 18 followed by veteran St.George’s all-rounder Herbie Bascome who added 16.
Earlier, Somerset also found runs hard to come by after being sent in to bat on a damp pitch against the visitors’ seam attack led by Troy Hall who claimed four for 20 off seven overs.
Charles Richardson led the Cleveland bowling with three for 32.
Cleveland’s bats struggled against the young bowlers with skipper Jason Simons top scoring on 18. Rodney Trott was the pick of the bowlers, snatching three wickets without conceding a run from just two overs.
