Junior riders take second place
Bermuda managed a second place finish behind Jamaica over the weekend in the second stage of the Caribbean Junior Jumping Championships held at the National Equestrian Centre on Vesey Street.
After four rounds Stephanie Wilkinson, competing in the 16 and under age group, had eight faults (two fences down) while JayLynn Hines, in the 12 and under group, had 20 faults for a combined team score of 28.
Jamaican 16 and under rider Justin Vaz incurred no faults at all in his four rounds while compatriot Shelby Wildish (12 and under) had 13 faults for a team total of 13.
Trinidad where third with a combined score of 78 and Cayman fourth with 97.
After three legs of the competition, which runs until November, Jamaica are first with a total of ten points, Trinidad second with seven and Bermuda further back on six.
The top three countries have all competed in two legs so far, with three rounds remaining in Antigua in June, Barbados in September and Jamaica in November.
Individual prizes were also on offer over the weekend with Vaz taking first and Wilkinson second among the under-16s.
In the 12 and under category, Wildish was first followed by Hines.
The top horse was Scooby Doo, loaned by his owner Gillian Olson and the best pony Somers Breeze, loaned by the Bell family.
In a separate event over the weekend, sponsored by Elbow Beach and open to adults and juniors, Catherine Jones riding Lyric won the Elbow Beach Sport Horse Challenge in an exciting jump-off after a four-way tie. Wilkinson, riding Tattetales, was second with the same number of points and only a few seconds behind.
