DeSilva, 76, claims first Seniors crown

Howard Desilva with his sparkling glass trophy reward for his first victory in the Bermuda Amateur Seniors Golf Championship, played at Belmont Hills last week.

Bermudian Howard DeSilva will head back to his home in Williamsburg, Virginia later this week with his luggage a little heavier than when he arrived.

Packed into the suitcase will be a sparkling glass trophy — reward for his first victory in the Bermuda Amateur Seniors Golf Championship, played at Belmont Hills last week.

At 76, DeSilva might have been one of the oldest in the field, but the six-handicapper, who was a member of the team which lifted the World Amateur Seniors Team Championship last year, proved too good for the rest of the field, including some players 20 years his junior.

With rounds of 76, 70 and 72, he posted a gross three-round total of 218 to pip John Richardson by a single stroke.

And besides lifting the winner’s trophy, DeSilva, who had previously finished as runner-up in the championships, earned himself a trip to the World Amateur Seniors event to be held later this year at a venue still to be determined.

Prize for first net score went to Millard Beach who carded a 54-hole total of 197 to win by seven shots.
