Bermuda’s top amateur boxer Nikki Bascome remains undefeated after scoring a points win over Argentina’s Matthew Abregu on Saturday night at Berkeley Institute.In the top amateur fight on the card for ‘Fight Night 15’, Bascome looked comfortable from the outset, being the aggressor throughout the fight, not letting his opponent get settled into any rhythm.Admitting before the fight that he was unaware of Abregu’s style, Bascome said he was pleased with his performance.He said: “I have learned that in the amateur setting you will experience many different styles and you have to be ready for everything so I’m ready for whatever.“My training and overall mentality of the way I should fight has changed over time but I’m dedicated to the sport and want to succeed.“I put the hard work in so I wasn’t afraid of his style, I can adapt to styles and so forth so sticking to the game plan was always the main focus.”A key moment that could have swung the fight in the visitor’s favour was the constant stoppages in the first round due head gear malfunctions for Bascome.Yet, to his credit, Bascome remained calm through the opening three minutes to go on and score a comfortable victory.“Keeping your composure as a fighter is crucial and with the head gear coming loose a few times in the first round it didn’t really bother me as I’m used to it.”Also on the undercard was American Christopher Gooch who defeated Rego’s Gym’s Andre Lambe on points.Jashaun Thomas of Rego’s Gym defeated his American opponent Jose Israel Flores on points, while Police Boxing’s Stefan Dill outboxed BDA Sanhou’s Shannon Ford on his way to winning their fight on points.Controversy Gym’s Stephen Wright did enough to defeat local fighter Diandre Burgess on points, and BDA Sanhou’s Reyel Bowen won his fight with a TKO over BDA Karate Institute’s Justin Tucker.BDA Karate Institute’s Corey Boyce and Controversy Gym’s Trey Simons entertained the crowd with some hard punches power, with Boyce coming away with a point’s decision, while BDA Sanshou’s Tariq Lynchwade also defeated Controversy Gym’s Brian Flynn on points.Bernard Opoku of Controversy Gym beat Rego’s Gym’s David McHugh by TKO.Le-Jai Tucker scored a points decision over his Rego’s Gym stablemate Andrew Haye in the opening fight of the night.
