Best Bid hand is worth a look

The 2019 Bermuda Sectional enters its second day today and I’ll bring you the full results in next week’s column. Following the successful format of last year, there will be two single-session events on the Friday, Saturday and Monday and the teams will be a two-session event on the Sunday afternoon and evening. The Friday and Monday sessions are at 12.30pm and 7.30pm; the Saturday at 10am and 2pm; and Sunday will be at 1pm and 7.30pm. There will also be a separate 99er game alongside the Saturday 2pm session. We expect a good attendance, and with chief director Peter Donnellan organising the event and ACBL director Jack Rhind running the sessions, one can expect a smoothly run and enjoyable event. Preceding the Sectional was a series of lessons run by the popular regular visitor Robert Todd. I’m sure many of his students will be looking to put their new-found knowledge to work at the event.Every year the International Bridge Press Association members vote on a series of awards based on hands covered by their members and submitted to them in a number of categories, which include Best Played, Best Defended and Best Bid hands — they make interesting reading. I rarely cover them here as they are often too complicated, but I thought this year’s Best Bid hand was worth a good look. Sitting North/South were Steve Robinson and Peter Boyd of the USA and the hand was reported by IBPA member Chip Dombrowski from Memphis.Dealer North E/W VulnerableThe bidding:North South 1 ? 4 ? 5 ? 5 ? 5 NT 7 ? 1 ? Normal opening bid showing at least five Spades and 13+ HCP4 ? Splinter — Spade support (at least four) and singleton or void Club5 ? Roman Key card ask including a void5 ? Two Key cards including the void, no trump QueenFive NT King ask, guarantees all Key cards including the trump Queen 7 ? Easy bid now as South has the only two remaining Kings Notice that North promised the Spade Queen with his 5NT bid even though he didn’t have it — that is because he had six Spades and knew partner had 4 to the Ace and that the Queen was likely to drop or be finessed. You should agree to do that with your partner when you know you have at least ten trumps.Great bidding and the five Club bid is a nifty gadget to have in the toolbox. In closing, I must relay the sad news of the passing of Malcolm Simmons, a fine player and a long-time member and supporter of the club. Malcolm was known for his quick wit and sharp sense of humour, and came to the game with a natural talent that was clearly developed from playing card games as a youngster. He will be sorely missed and the thoughts of all at the club are with his family and close friends.
