It’s back: bigger Beermuda set for June

A weekend haven for beer aficionados with live music was sufficient enough a hit upon its launch last year for Beermuda to make a comeback — and on a larger scale.

Freddy Phillips and Mark Way, of the microbrewery Bermuda Craft Brewing, told The Royal Gazette they believed the festival at the National Sports Centre in Devonshire, combining entertainment for children with a wide menu of tipple and live shows, had gained the momentum to make it a regular event.

“We’re trying to create that village vibe where people can come and hang out throughout the day, or come and go,” Mr Phillips said. “We want to make this an annual thing.

“The feedback from last year was insane; it exceeded our expectations. People said they’d never gone to an event like it in Bermuda.”

The organisers said Chris Bullard, a performer from Nashville, Tennessee, was keen to return for a rock show on the night of June 20 followed by his signature country music on the second day, while local bands, including Working Title and an array of DJs, would turn both nights into a party.

The two said that festivals were growing in popularity worldwide and that Bermuda was no different.

Mr Phillips said there would be “close to 50 different kinds of beer to sample”, along with craft cocktails such as the island’s signature dark and stormy mixed with homemade ginger beer.

Five visiting breweries are to attend alongside Bermuda Craft Brewing: two from the Netherlands, two from the United States and one from Hungary.

The festival remains plastic-free, with patrons receiving a reusable tasting cup on entry. Sampling is to continue until 8pm, when the nightly festivities begin.

Mr Phillips said: “I’ve been to beer festivals that are very beer-geek-focused. We’ve created more of a family atmosphere.”

Pouring up beer

Children’s entertainment comes with games and a bouncy castle area, while games for adults include beer pong, a mechanical bull and the Beermuda Beer Mile on the Saturday at the North Field track. Food will also be available.

A variety of tickets and passes are available at gobeermuda.com.

The two men said last year’s healthy turnout had about 800 people for the Friday opening day, but close to 1,800 people arrived on the Saturday.

“We’re expecting to sell out this year, definitely for the Saturday, so we’re encouraging people to get their tickets early,” Mr Phillips said.
