Bermuda ready to perform in under-14 semi-final
Bermuda will attempt to keep their Caribbean Football Union Girls Under-14 Challenge Series title hopes alive when they square off with Dominican Republic in the semi-final in Trinidad & Tobago on Friday (6pm).
The young Lady Gombey Warriors fought back to draw 1-1 with Aruba in their final group match at Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva on Tuesday, with a point enough for Don Vickers’s side to go through on goal difference alongside group winners Jamaica.
Phoenix Williams was the toast of the dressing room as her equaliser with the last kick of the game in second-half stoppage time kept Bermuda’s title hopes intact.
Vickers is now bracing himself for what he anticipates will be another tough outing against Dominican Republic, which will be played at the same venue.
“The opposition will be tough and are a very, very good team,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“This is a team that has beat us at all levels of football, men and women, so we have an idea about them and they have an idea about us. It should be a good match.”
However, Vickers is cautiously optimistic that his team can come away with the desired result.
“As long as we are able to get on the pitch, we always give ourselves an opportunity and back ourselves,” he said.
“We are going to play our way of football, which has been very good in the last couple of games, trust our philosophy and however it goes, it goes.
“These girls have done well and have done Bermuda proud, so I am proud of them regardless how the result goes, and we are looking forward to it.”
The match is a part of a semi-final double header at Ato Bolden Stadium as Jamaica will square off with Puerto Rico immediately following Bermuda’s match.
