Man fined $1,500, banned for drink-driving

A man was fined $1,500 yesterday after he admitted drink-driving.

Jodel Competente, 36, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to driving while impaired by alcohol and driving while over the legal blood-alcohol limit.

The court heard that police were on mobile patrol near Cedar Hill in Warwick when they saw a motorcycle swerving and riding very slowly.

Officers pulled over the motorcyclist, whom they later learnt was Competente, and saw that he was unsteady on his feet during questioning.

When asked if he had consumed any alcohol, Competente said he had “two Heinekens”.

Police arrested him on suspicion of drink-driving and took him to Hamilton Police Station, where they demanded a sample of breath for analysis.

After taking the test, police discovered that Competente had 106.3 milligrams of alcohol in every 100 millilitres of blood. The legal alcohol limit is 80mg/100ml.

The incident happened in the early hours of August 10.

Magistrate Craig Attridge banned Competente, from Warwick, from the roads for 18 months in addition to the fine, which he was ordered to pay that day.
