Hotels report minimal damage in the wake of Hurricane Imelda
Many hotels faced minimal problems during Hurricane Imelda, with many on track to start normal services this morning.
Larry Lambe, the general manager of the Pompano Beach Club in Southampton, said the storm was almost underwhelming.
He said: “We didn’t lose power. We didn’t even lose the leaves on our trees.
“We kept waiting for the wind to pick up and it never did.”
Mr Lambe said that his hotel had 60 guests and a skeleton crew of staff who stayed overnight.
He said that they had a DJ who carried out his weekly performance before leaving well before the storm was scheduled to hit.
Mr Lambe said that the DJ lived near by and was in no danger.
He added that even during the hurricane the property was not dealt any damage.
Mr Lambe said: “I feel absolutely blessed that nothing happened, but there was a lot of effort that went into something that didn’t happen.
“We were prepared, and I was up all night to turn the generator on and nothing happened.”
He added: “Even on windy days, you get small sticks or leaves and we just didn’t have that.
“Maybe we were just lucky being on the western side, but it was completely uneventful.”
David Dodwell Jr, the general manager of The Reefs, said his Southampton hotel fared “really, really well”, with only a shutter missing from one of the properties.
He admitted that several visitors had to cancel or postpone their stays, but the ones who remained during the storm made the best of a bad situation.
Mr Dodwell said: “We want to give them a great experience, even if that’s during a hurricane.”
He said that the 100 guests between the hotel and residents were treated to a “swizzle party” and a dinner before the storm hit.
Mr Dodwell said his team was crucial in making the night entertaining, adding that residents commended staff for their efforts.
He added: “It’s really thanks to the staff for keeping the place running before, during and after the storm.
“It’s a big testament to the work of our team.
“We have a great team who put in a lot of effort.”
Mr Dodwell said he expected normal services to resume by today.
The Hamilton Princess & Beach Club opened its hotel yesterday, with the Exhale Spa and Gym open until 6pm.
The restaurants Crown & Anchor, Intrepid and The Duchess Café and Gelateria opened Thursday afternoon, with the 1609 Restaurant and Marina Bar scheduled to open today.
