The final round of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship is shaping up to be a thriller as 14 players are within five shots of tournament leaders Braden Thornberry and Adam Schenk.

After a windswept Saturday at Port Royal Golf Course, Americans Thornberry and Schenk hold a one-shot advantage with 18 holes to play after capitalising on the wobble of overnight leader Adam Hadwin, who bogeyed two of the last three holes on a blustery back nine.

Schenk joined Hadwin at the summit after the 2017 Valspar Championship winner dropped a shot at Port Royal’s signature 16th hole before taking the lead outright with a birdie on the next hole.

Hadwin, playing in the final group behind Schenk, immediately bounced back with a birdie at the par-5 17th, which moved him level with the leader again.

Thornberry, playing alongside Hadwin in the final group, then propelled himself to the top of the leaderboard after nailing a 36ft eagle putt at the same hole before Schenk squandered an opportunity to regain the outright lead after failing to convert a birdie putt on the last hole.

Hadwin dropped another shot on the last hole when he was unable to save par after his second shot found the greenside bunker. Thornberry parred the last hole to stay level with Schenk at 12 under through 54 holes.

Schenk was among a trio of players producing bogey-free rounds, which also included American Chan Kim and Japan’s Takumi Kanaya.

Kim and American Alex Smalley coped best in the challenging conditions on the way to the low round of 65.

Hadwin, who led the way in the first two rounds, is now tied for third with Kanaya and Americans Max McGreevy and Chandler Phillips at 11 under.

Also in the hunt is Irishman Seamus Power, the 2022 champion, who is among a bunch of players tied for eighth, a farther two shots back of the lead.

The leader after three rounds has gone on to win the PGA Tour event just twice in the previous six tournaments. Power and defending champion Rafael Campos were co-leaders with 18 holes to play.
