Man fined $4,000 for cursing at senior magistrate in court

An incomplete community service order turned into $4,000 worth of fines yesterday for a man who uttered obscenities in court at the senior magistrate.

Taiheem Trott, 47, appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday after failing to complete a community service order in place of paying fines.

The court heard that Trott, from Sandys, faced a fine in 2024 that he asked to be converted into community service hours instead.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson pointed out that while he had served some hours, he failed to appear before the Department of Court Services for an evaluation.

She added that he never appeared for community service hours since.

The amount owed was not read out in court.

Trott acknowledged that missed his previous date, but said that he had appeared before the Department of Court Services on “many occasions” to make up for it.

He said that, at some point, court service workers had cursed him out and refused to work with him.

Trott added that his case had been passed over to three workers since being issued the community service order.

“There guys are not doing their jobs,” he told the court.

Ms Anderson told Trott that it was still his responsibility to attend his duties and contact the courts if a problem came up.

The senior magistrate said that the balance would be converted back into fines that Trott would have to pay.

In response, Trott left the courtroom, yelling: “F*** this place.”

Ms Anderson warned him that he could face a $2,000 for contempt over using offensive words against the court.

To this, Trott said: “Suck my d***.”

Ms Anderson fined him another $2,000 for contempt of court.
