RG Fantasy League: is dropping Erling Haaland still unthinkable?
Erling Haaland has scored just one goal in his last eight games, a penalty against Brighton in the Premier League.
Three of those eight games have been in the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Champions League so the streak has not affected Fantasy League competition too much but if Manchester City’s blip continues could managers do something that seemed unthinkable just a month ago and drop the game’s top points scorer.
Haaland was substituted by Pep Guardiola in the Manchester derby last week and this week could provide the litmus test for future plans with City at home to bottom club Wolves.
Another blank week and with City’s next three league games coming away to Tottenham, at home to Newcastle and away to Liverpool, and it may time to move on for Haaland.
Saturday
West Ham United v Sunderland (8.30pm)
West Ham have won just two of their 11 home games and Sunderland just two of their 11 away games. Winger Crysencio Summerville has struck form for West Ham with 14 points in his past two games and should feature heavily
Despite their relatively poor away form, Sunderland have conceded just 14 goals on the road ― only six teams have conceded fewer. Defender Nordi Mukiele has scored 34 points in his past six games and is the seventh-highest scorer among defenders.
Prediction: 1-1
Burnley v Tottenham (11am)
Tottenham manager Thomas Frank may have been granted a stay of execution after the Champions League win over Dortmund but defeat here could be his last. Ben Davies is the latest Tottenham player out with injury but Dominic Solanke is back leading the line and is one to watch in the coming weeks.
Burnley’s last two Premier League games brought away draws at Manchester United and Liverpool. Their striker Zian Flemming would be of interest if he returns from five games out injured.
Prediction: 1-2
Fulham v Brighton & Hove Albion (11am)
Fulham’s home form has been good with only three defeats in 11 games at Craven Cottage and Harry Wilson is the best-value midfielder in the game. He is one of just seven midfielders who have racked up more than 100 points and has a combined ten goals and assists in his last ten games.
It’s time for Brighton to start forward Charalampos Kostoulas. The 18-year-old scored a fantastic overhead kick against Bournemouth last week and also provided an assist in his penultimate match against Burnley. He is a potential star and should be brought into your team as soon as he gets a run of starts.
Prediction: 1-1
Manchester City v Wolverhampton Wanderers (11am)
The arrival of bottom club Wolves to the Etihad is probably a sign to get new City signing, defender Marc Guehi, into your team. This is a huge clean sheet opportunity for him, while he also paks a punch in the opposition box from set pieces.
Wolves are still the only Premier League club without an away win and it is unlikely their players will be picking up too many points here.
Prediction: 3-0
Bournemouth v Liverpool (1.30pm)
Another tough game for Liverpool with Bournemouth losing just two of their 11 home league matches this season. But the home side are now without Antoine Semenyo and their best defender Marcos Senesi is rumoured to be attracting the attention of some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Liverpool have won less than half of their away games, with their four away wins coming at Newcastle, Tottenham, Burnley and West Ham. Mohamed Salah made his return from the Africa Cup of Nations in the Champions League in midweek.
Prediction: 1-1
Sunday
Brentford v Nottingham Forest (10am)
Only the top three ― Arsenal, Manchester City and Aston Villa ― have a better home record than Brentford. Only Haaland and Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice have scored more points than Brentford forward Igor Thiago.
Nottingham Forest travelled to Portugal in midweek to play Braga in the Europa League and they have just one win in their last seven matches in all competitions.
Prediction: 2-0
Crystal Palace v Chelsea (10am)
Things seem to be imploding at Crystal Palace with coach Oliver Glasner hitting out at the board and announcing his decision to leave the club at the end of the season, Marc Guehi being sold to Manchester City and Jean-Philippe Mateta saying he wants a move in this transfer window.
Chelsea struggled to beat lowly Pafos in the Champions League in midweek as new coach Liam Rosenior starts to imprint his style on the team. Trevoh Chalobah is the game’s second-best defender with 110 points, while Enzo Fernandez has 27 points from his last four games.
Prediction: 0-2
Newcastle United v Aston Villa (10am)
Only the top three have won more home games than Newcastle United and Yoane Wissa has started to find the net. Their best player, midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, is struggling with injury after coming off against Marseille in the Champions League in midweek.
Aston Villa played away in Turkey in the Europa League on Thursday and their form has dipped slightly with a defeat to Everton and a defeat to Crystal Palace in their past two games. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is out injured and that is a worry with Villa’s poor form at the start of the season coming with Marco Bizot in goal.
Prediction: 2-1
Arsenal v Manchester United (12.30pm)
The game’s best midfielder, Declan Rice, was rested from the starting XI against Inter Milan in the Champions League but is expected to return here. Gabriel Jesus is challenging Viktor Gyokeres for the starting striker spot.
Michael Carrick conjured up United’s best performance in years against City last week and is likely to start with the team, which means Kobbie Mainoo is preferred in midfield and Bryan Mbeumo starts up front in preference to Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko.
Prediction: 1-0
Monday
Everton v Leeds (4pm)
Everton are one of the few teams with fewer home points than away. Jack Grealish is out injured but Iliman Ndiaye and Idrissa Gana Gueye have returned from the Africa Cup of Nations. Forward Tierno Barry has scored three goals in his past four games.
Leeds have won just one of their 11 away games.
Prediction: 1-1
