Have you ever thought of competing in a running event with no set finishing line?

Well Run Bermuda’s Backyard Ultra Race will give you just that opportunity on February 21 at Southside in St David’s.

Sponsored by Monument Re, the event features runners completing loops of 4.167 miles every hour on the hour until there is only one runner left standing. Any time between the completion of a loop and the start of the next hour, the participants are allowed to rest, refuel, and hydrate. The goal is simple: to try and complete as many 4.167 loops as one possibly can.

This will be the fourth year of the event and participants have raised $46,000 for Raleigh Bermuda’s youth programmes since its inception. Monument Re’ have also stepped in to ensure that 100 per cent of 2026 entry fees will again go to the charity.

Runners targeting any distance, whether one or two loops or a pathway to qualify for international competition, are welcome and Bermuda athletes competed in the 2024 World Team Championships, powering Bermuda to a top-50 finish.

Two-times champion Jason Williams will be the man to beat. He earned entry into last year’s individual World Championships in Tennessee, where he set a new national record after running for 42 hours and reaching 175 miles. Qualification spots to join Jason and last year’s winner Florin Teleman on the Bermuda team for the 2026 World Team Event in October are to be contested at this event.

Andy McComb, the race co-ordinator, is urging the local community to take part in a truly unique event.

“The local running community has embraced the backyard format,” McComb said.

“It offers a unique chance to push your personal limits in a safe and supportive environment, whether that is going beyond 5k or 10k or half marathon distance for the first time or breaking into ultra distance and running through the night.

“It is a test of endurance for all participants but because everybody starts each lap together, there is a very special camaraderie and inclusivity to the event.”
